CHAPTER TEN

‘IT’S your mother on the phone.’ Ginny had rung through.

Ava was about to tell Ginny that she was in with a client, but instead she asked that she be put through. ‘You might as well go now, Ginny. I’ve just got a quick phone consultation and then I’m heading home,’ Ava said, then took a breath and took the call from her mum.

‘Hi, there,’ Ava said.

‘Hi, Ava.’ Fleur wasn’t really one for chatting. ‘Any news on James?’

‘Nothing yet,’ Ava said, because they weren’t expecting the results till next week and she wasn’t sure that they were even going to make it to next week. She had been on the edge of tears between every patient, had the most appalling feeling in her stomach and all she wanted was to go home.

‘Well, let your father and I know when you hear.’ There was a slight pause. ‘How are you?’

‘I’ve been better,’ Ava admitted. ‘Actually, Mum…’ And then she stopped herself because she was not going to discuss this with her mother and, anyway, Fleur wouldn’t understand—her parents’ marriage was so liberal and open, she could never understand what Ava was grappling with, aside from James’s illness.

Still, maybe she could do with a dose of liberality, Ava thought, maybe she could try talking with her mum. Her mum wouldn’t turn a hair if she told her she thought James had had an affair, was still having one.

Turn a blind eye would be her mother’s advice. It was strange really, everyone thought Ava was so open-minded, so liberal, except she only was with James. She really did believe in love and was so proud of the couples that came to see her and worked through things. Yes, maybe she did need some of her mum’s rather more open views. ‘I was thinking I might come over and see you this weekend.’

‘Oh!’ She could hear the surprise in her mother’s voice. ‘Is he up and about, then?’

‘Not with James,’ Ava said. Perish the thought, James didn’t exactly like her parents, had said in some rows how they’d messed her up, and the thought of them together with tensions so high didn’t particularly appeal. ‘Just me. I’ll see how the next couple of days go and let you know.’

‘Well, ring first,’ Fleur warned. ‘I don’t want you driving all that way if I’m out.’

She was thoughtful like that, Ava refelected darkly, putting down the phone and resting her head in her hands. For all Veronica irritated her at times, at least she was there. All the Carmichael clan had been around and had it been Ava they would have done the same. Well, maybe it would be a slightly diluted version and maybe the fridge would be more full so that James wouldn’t starve while she was incapacitated, but at least they would have stepped up.

Her mother hadn’t so much as sent a card or even spoken to James.

Ava had never been close to her mother, or her father. The only person in her life she’d been really close to had been James.
